Oakland Killing

When I saw footage of this young man being shot I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Oscar Grant III, a 22 year old from Oakland, was being held by police at the BART station with friends. The situation and the young people being held seemed calm but one cop drew his gun and shot Grant in the back. Footage was taken by many on lookers recording the inscedent with their phones and cameras.

The youth of Oakland gathered to protest on New Year's Day and things got heated. Police sprayed tear gas, assaulted protesters, and arrested citizens.

In spite of the violence, the kids out there did a great job in getting the word out, mobilizing, and using whatever means they could to document. In my opinion, the unrest was not primarily due to racial tension, it was more about the youth of the city displaying their anger with police brutality.
